I owe much to Anglo Saxon poetry: its rhythm, subject matter, narrative element, sound, its use of alliteration and assonance rather than word-ending rhyme. However, I'm now increasingly influenced by the sounds of the Pacific - of birds, languages, the strongly choral music of New Zealand and the Pacific Islands - and the otherness of Australia. The secret life of wildlife (in crystal detail) and its absolute right to exist, are very important to me - what they do when we are not there. My own habitat is poetry.
